Grovelands Primary School uses evidence-based practices and programs to teach English. The school implements a whole-school approach and a common instructional framework—Review, Teach, Practice, Apply, Revisit—to ensure consistency across all year levels and to support effective collaboration and planning.
Reading and writing are closely connected. Our teaching programs develop these skills together, helping students become confident readers and writers.
From Pre-Primary to Year 2, we use Letters and Sounds to teach phonics in a structured sequence. Students learn to recognise the sounds in words and connect them with letters and letter combinations, building essential skills for reading and spelling.
In Years 3-6, we use Spelling Success in Action to build on this foundation. Students explore meaningful word parts, such as prefixes, suffixes and base words, while strengthening their understanding of sound-letter relationships and spelling patterns.
From Kindergarten to Year 6, we use Talk for Writing to help students become confident writers. Through storytelling, discussion and practical activities, students build their vocabulary, develop ideas and practise expressing themselves aloud before writing. They explore model texts and learn to adapt them before creating their own pieces of writing.
At Grovelands, language comprehension instruction is embedded into all areas of the Literacy block, including Talk for Writing, shared and modelled reading, text-based units and novel studies, as well as across other learning areas such as HASS and Science. Students’ background knowledge and vocabulary are developed through rich conversations and purposeful engagement with content.

At Grovelands Primary School, we are strengthening our whole-school approach to mathematics, with consistent teaching and high expectations for every student. We focus on building strong number sense through clear instruction, structured practice and hands-on activities, helping students understand how numbers work and become confident mathematical thinkers.
We use Top Ten Maths as our core mathematics program across all year levels. Through hands-on activities, concrete materials and visual models, students explore how numbers work and relate to one another.
This approach helps students build understanding, recall key number facts and develop efficient mental strategies. Shared language and consistent teaching strategies support continuity of learning as students progress through the school, building confidence along the way.
Our whole-school RTPAR (Review-Teach-Practice-Apply-Revisit) pedagogical framework underpins Mathematics instruction. Lessons incorporate explicit teaching and modelling, guided and shared practice, and opportunities for independent application. This structured approach ensures students are supported, challenged and equipped with effective strategies.
Teachers work collaboratively in year-level teams, using assessment data including Elastik reviews, moderation tasks and classroom observations to inform their planning. This enables the design of targeted, responsive learning experiences that support ongoing growth and ensure every student’s progress is closely monitored and addressed.
